I moved my day to day use to a free ChatGPT account on August 11, the Monday after OpenAI switched off the text message cap, and kept it there since. I wanted an honest answer to one question: is the free plan now something you can work in, or is it still a demo that nudges you toward Plus every twenty minutes?
The wall that used to appear mid conversation is gone. I ran a 70 message thread about a rental agreement, a daily Spanish habit, and one long disagreement with the model over a spreadsheet formula, and never saw the old limit notice on plain text. What I did hit, more than once, were the caps that survived: image generation, file uploads and voice. In the United States I also now see a sponsored box under some answers.
This guide sticks to the free plan only: what is included as of September 3, 2026, what still runs out, when each cap resets, where ads appear, and what people online are saying. Everything is checked against OpenAI's own announcement and help pages, and I flag any number that comes from user reports rather than from OpenAI.
| The short answer | |
| Text chats | Unlimited on GPT-5.6 Luna since the week of August 10, 2026, subject to abuse guardrails. |
| Still capped | Image generation, file and image uploads, data analysis, voice, GPTs usage, Codex and Work. |
| Ads | Shown to Free and Go users in more than 40 countries. Plus and above stay ad free. |
| Cost to lift it | Go at $8 a month raises the caps but keeps ads. Plus at $20 a month removes ads and adds GPT-5.6 Sol. |
What changed on August 6, 2026
OpenAI announced two updates on the same day. Plus and Pro subscribers received an updated GPT-5.6 Sol with a reasoning slider. Free and Go accounts got GPT-5.6 Luna as their default model in place of GPT-5.5 Instant, plus a promise of unlimited text chats and a Think button from the following week. The company was specific that unlimited applies to text and that file uploads, images and other tools keep their limits.
Free plan before and after the August update
| Area | July 2026 | Now |
|---|---|---|
| Default model | GPT-5.5 Instant | GPT-5.6 Luna |
| Text messages | Around 10 per five hours, then a drop to a mini model (user reported) | Unlimited |
| Reasoning | No dependable option | Think button, one mode |
| Uploads, images, voice | Capped | Still capped |
| Ads | US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand | 40 plus countries |

The rollout was staged. On my account the model name changed on August 7 and the limit notice disappeared on August 11. If you still see a come back later message on a plain text conversation, log out and back in before assuming the change has not reached you.
What the free plan includes
OpenAI's free tier FAQ lists these features. I have marked each by how it behaved for me over three weeks.
Unlimited Text chat on GPT-5.6 Luna No message counter and no drop to a smaller model after a burst of questions. Only accounts that look automated get slowed. | Unlimited Think button One reasoning mode. On mobile, open the plus menu and choose Think; on web it is still rolling out. Counts as text unless the same message also processes a file or calls a tool. |
Included Web search Runs inside normal chats with linked sources. I used it daily and never hit a search specific notice, though OpenAI publishes no number. | Capped File and image uploads Upload documents and photos and ask about them. Files land in your Library, which holds 500 MB on free, and the upload count has its own limit. |
Capped Image generation Works, but only a handful of images a day. The notice that appears when you run out shows when you can try again. | Capped Voice GPT-Live voice launched in July 2026. Free accounts get the smaller GPT-Live-1 mini model with a limited daily allowance. |
Capped GPTs from the GPT Store Browse and use existing GPTs. Access pauses when you reach the free model limit and returns at the time shown. Creating new GPTs is off for all personal plans. | Capped Codex and Work Both usable on free with limited allowances. Work only runs inside the desktop app. |
Paid GPT-5.6 Sol and the slider The stronger model and adjustable reasoning effort require Plus or Pro. | Paid Deep Research, Agent mode, Canvas Deep Research shows a small allowance at most. Agent mode and Canvas did not appear on my free account. |
Paid Ad free experience Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu carry no ads. Free and Go do. |
Memory and chat history are included, but OpenAI says both memory and the context window are more limited on free. Long threads with several uploaded files forgot earlier details sooner than my paid account does.
The caps that survived
OpenAI does not publish exact numbers for the free tier and says the limits can change. Figures marked as user reported come from community testing and match what I saw.

Free plan limits as of September 2026
| Feature | Free allowance | How it resets |
|---|---|---|
| Text chat | Unlimited | Never runs out. Abuse guardrails only. |
| Think | Included with text | Counted as text unless files or tools are involved. |
| Image generation | Roughly 2 to 3 per day (user reported) | Rolling 24 hours from your first image, not midnight. |
| File and image uploads | Separate cap, 500 MB Library | Rolling window. The notice shows the time. |
| Data analysis | Separate cap | Same pattern as uploads. |
| Voice | GPT-Live-1 mini, limited minutes | Rolling 24 hours (user reported). |
| GPTs | Follows the free model limit | Pauses until the reset shown in the notice. |
| Deep Research | Small allowance at best | Treat it as a paid feature. |
| Codex and Work | Limited | Visible in Settings under Usage. |
When the limits reset
This is the question I get asked most, so here is the reset logic in one place. The old five hour rolling window on text appears to have been retired in July 2026, before the unlimited change, and Engadget reports that free accounts now see a single weekly usage view under Settings instead.
Text No clock. You can keep typing. | Images 24 hours from your first generation, not from midnight. One at 9 pm blocks you until 9 pm tomorrow. | Uploads and analysis Rolling window. The in chat notice tells you when to come back. |
Voice Daily allowance measured over a rolling 24 hours, per user reports. | GPTs Tied to the free model limit. Access pauses, then returns at the time shown. | Upgrade Moving to Go, Plus, Pro or Business resets your usage immediately. |

Two habits saved me time. Check Settings and then Usage before starting a batch of images, and keep file heavy work in its own thread. Think on a plain text question stays free, but the same question with a PDF attached draws from the upload allowance.
The model you get: GPT-5.6 Luna
Luna is the smallest of the three GPT-5.6 models OpenAI released on July 9, 2026, alongside Sol and Terra. It is built to be cheap enough to serve a billion weekly users, and on the free plan it is the only model in the picker.
Free vs paid model access
| Free and Go | Plus and Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Chat model | GPT-5.6 Luna | GPT-5.6 Sol (updated August 6) |
| Reasoning control | Think button, on or off | Slider from quick replies to extended effort |
| Text message cap | None | None |
| Voice model | GPT-Live-1 mini | GPT-Live-1 |
OpenAI's own evaluation of financial, medical and legal prompts found responses with at least one factual error were about 62 percent less common with Luna than with GPT-5.5 Instant. That is an internal figure, so treat it as a claim. My experience is narrower but consistent with it. Luna is quick and handles drafting, summaries, translations and everyday questions without fuss. It leans on bullet points and bold text more than Sol does, and it agrees with me a little too readily. Pressing Think fixed most of the mistakes I caught on maths and multi step comparisons. For anything where a wrong citation would cost me, I still switched to a paid account and used Sol with search.
Ads on the free plan
Ads began as a US test for Free and Go accounts on February 9, 2026. Pilots followed in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, then the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea went live on August 11. On August 24 OpenAI switched ads on across 31 European markets, and a week later it said the ads business had passed $1 billion in annualised revenue and reached more than 40 countries.

How ads show up, and what you can do about them • They sit in a labelled sponsored section below the answer, usually a product or service tied to what you asked, such as a sauce brand under a pasta recipe. • OpenAI says ads do not change the answer, advertisers never see your conversations, and no ads appear for accounts it believes belong to under 18s or near topics such as personal health, mental health and politics. • You can dismiss an ad, see why it was shown, view and clear an ads history, and switch off personalisation. • Switching personalisation off changes which ads you see, not whether you see them. OpenAI's February post mentioned a free tier opt out in exchange for fewer daily messages, but it has not said how that works now that text is unlimited, and I could not find the switch on my account. The dependable way to remove ads is Plus or a higher plan. Go at $8 keeps them. |

I saw a sponsored box under perhaps one in four shopping or planning answers and almost never under coding or writing help. It is small and easy to ignore, but it is there, and it is the reason the free plan can afford to drop the text cap.
Your data and model training
Free accounts are enrolled in model training by default. Turning it off takes about ten seconds on the web version.
1. Click your profile icon in the bottom left corner. 2. Open Settings. 3. Choose Data Controls. 4. Switch off Improve the model for everyone. |
What people are saying online about the free version
The August update drew a 280 comment discussion on Hacker News, a widely shared post on X, and the usual Reddit threads.
Hacker News, on the model One commenter called unlimited Luna a “pretty badass move” and said the model is very good. Another argued Luna is just the next version of the old Instant tier and that the free default has not stood out since GPT-4o. A third said the jump from GPT-5.5 Instant, which they found noticeably bad, is real. | Hacker News, on the Think button A popular view was that giving free users a reasoning mode will change more for ordinary people than any paid model release. Others noted that free users had a thinking option before, lost it for a few months, and are now getting it back. |
X, on the announcement A post from OpenAI's Tibo Sottiaux announcing unlimited text chats passed 189,000 views in a day. The top replies were Plus subscribers asking whether to cancel and go free, and one person surprised to learn ChatGPT ever had message limits. | Reddit, on limits and ads A July r/ChatGPT thread asked whether the five hour limit had quietly been removed, which is how the change was first noticed. On ads, the dominant reaction was to call it enshittification; the common counter view is that ads on the $0 and $8 plans are a fair trade for a text cap that no longer exists. |
The comparison people keep making Several commenters said the real rival to free ChatGPT is not Plus but Google's AI Overviews and Gemini's free tier, and that Luna needs to be clearly better than those to justify opening a separate app. |
Free vs Go vs Plus
The three plans most free users compare
| Plan | Price | Chat model | Uploads and images | Ads |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | GPT-5.6 Luna, unlimited text | Base caps | Yes, in 40 plus countries |
| Go | $8 a month | GPT-5.6 Luna, unlimited text | OpenAI describes it as 10 times the free allowance | Yes |
| Plus | $20 a month | GPT-5.6 Sol with reasoning slider | Far higher caps, Deep Research, Agent mode, Canvas | No |
Stay on free if you • Mostly type questions and want answers, drafts, summaries or translations. • Generate an image or two a day and can wait for more. • Do not mind a sponsored box under some answers. | Pay if you • Upload files or generate images in batches. Go is the cheapest fix for that. • Need Sol for research, long documents or work with real consequences. • Would rather pay $20 than see ads at all. |
Final verdict after three weeks on free
The free plan is now a real product rather than a trial. Removing the text cap changes how it feels to use: I stopped rationing questions, stopped opening a second account, and stopped watching the clock. Luna with Think handled roughly nine out of ten things I asked it in a normal week, and the tenth was usually a sourcing job where I wanted Sol anyway.
The catch has moved rather than vanished. You used to run out of messages. Now you run out of images, uploads and voice, and you see ads while you do it. If your use is mostly typing, none of that will bother you. If you lean on files or pictures, the free plan will make you wait every day, and Go at $8 is the honest answer for that.
What I keep coming back to is that a current generation model with a reasoning mode is available to anyone, with no card and no message count, for the price of a sponsored box. Two years ago that would have sounded like a rumour. I am keeping the free account as my second window, and I would tell most people to start there and pay only when a specific cap starts costing them time.
