I went into this Hotpot AI review expecting to spend an afternoon generating short stories, product blurbs, and a few Instagram captions, then report back on how the writing held up. That is not the review you are reading. I created a completely new account, opened Sparkwriter, set up a 500 word psychological thriller titled "My Therapist Is Scared of Me", and pressed Create. A box titled Credits Required appeared. My balance read zero. The story cost ten.
So this became a different kind of review. I can walk you through the signup flow, every dropdown inside Sparkwriter, the exact credit pricing, and what a new user sees when they try to write without paying. What I cannot do is show you Hotpot's prose, because Hotpot never wrote any for me. Where output quality matters, I lean on reviewers who paid for credits, and I flag that each time so you know which claims come from my screen and which come from theirs.
If you landed here asking "is Hotpot AI free", the short answer for the writing tool is: not in the way you might hope.

What Hotpot AI is
Hotpot AI is a browser based platform run by Panabee, LLC, whose name sits in the site footer. GPTZero's review describes it as a small New York company that launched Hotpot in 2021 with Google Ventures backing. The navigation splits everything into five product families.

Signing up: what a new account looks like
The signup form is as short as they come: email address, password, one blue Sign Up button. No card, no phone number, no plan selection. I was inside the account within a minute.
The account home page is a plain list of links: Logout, Cancel/Manage subscription, Help, a Profile block with your email, and two credit links, "Missing credits?" and "Buy credits". Below that sits a promotion: spend 30 dollars or more, forward your receipt, and claim 20 dollars of AI headshot credit. Two things stood out. The page shows no credit balance anywhere. And a "Missing credits?" link on the first screen after login suggests credit confusion is common enough to need its own help path.

Sparkwriter lives at hotpot.ai/sparkwriter and is pitched as a brainstorming and drafting tool for stories, product descriptions, song lyrics, product names, ads, and social posts. The interface is one left hand panel with four dropdowns plus a topic box, and an empty area where output appears. Every option is listed below.

Two observations. The goal list leans toward ideas and short marketing copy; only Short Story and Writing Sample produce anything long. And the style list is unusual. Most AI writers offer "professional" or "friendly". Hotpot offers Yoda, Poe, and Austen. That is either a fun differentiator or a sign the tool was built for novelty prompts rather than working writers, and without output I cannot tell you which.
The zero credit wall, step by step
Here is exactly what happened, in order, so you can decide whether it would happen to you.
1. Set up the story. Goal on Short Story, topic entered, style left on Psychological Thriller, audience on Adults, length on 500 words.
2. Check the meter. Two coin icons under the controls showed Credit cost 10 and Credit balance 0. The Create button was active, not greyed out.
1. Press Create. A modal appeared headed Credits Required with one line: buy credits to continue, or use free settings. No hint about which settings are free.
2. Open Buy credits. The pricing modal loaded with Pay Once, Pay Monthly, and Pay Yearly tabs, documented in the next section.
3. Look for the free path. Hotpot's pricing page says most products offer free exploration, with commercial use and advanced settings needing credits. My story stayed at ten credits, the balance at zero, and the tool would not run. I closed the session without one generated word.

Monthly and yearly plans deliver the listed credits every month, so the 100 dollar yearly plan is 12,000 credits a year. Every tier carries the same footnote: spend 30 dollars and get 20 dollars of AI headshot credit by emailing your receipt.

Final verdict
Most AI writing tools I have tested make the same mistake: they let you generate freely and hide the cost until you export. Hotpot does the opposite. It shows the cost immediately, in coins, under the controls, then refuses to run until you pay. I respect the meter. I do not respect a modal that tells a new user to "use free settings" and leaves them to guess which ones those are.
That one choice shaped this whole review. I spent the session clicking through every dropdown, reading the pricing page twice, and hunting for the free path the interface promised. I never found it. What I found was a well organised toolbox, a playful set of writing styles, clear and cheap credit pricing, and a Trustpilot page full of people who paid and could not get anyone to answer an email.
If you want Hotpot for images, the reviewers I trust say the free daily generations are enough to judge it before spending anything. If you want it for writing, budget 12 dollars, buy the smallest pack, and run twenty test generations across the goals you actually use. That is the trial Hotpot should have given me. At roughly 12 cents a story you will know within an hour whether the output is worth editing or whether a free chat assistant would do the same job for nothing.
I will update this Hotpot AI review if I get credits and can put Sparkwriter through a proper run. Until then, the score above reflects what a new user meets on day one: a fast signup, a clear price list, and a locked door.
